Use of Artificial Intelligence During Consultations

Melbourne Balance Clinic uses artificial intelligence-assisted clinical documentation software, sometimes called an AI scribe, to help prepare accurate and detailed consultation notes.

With your consent, the software may listen to and transcribe your consultation before generating a draft clinical note. This allows your doctor to spend less time typing and more time listening to you, examining your symptoms and discussing your care.

AI is used only to assist with clinical documentation. It does not replace your doctor’s judgement, make diagnoses or determine your treatment.

Review of Clinical Notes

The AI software produces a draft only. Your doctor remains responsible for your medical record and will review, edit and approve the clinical notes before they are finalised.

AI-generated information is not relied upon without clinical review. This is important because AI tools can occasionally produce errors, omissions or inconsistencies.

Privacy and Confidentiality

Information processed through the AI scribe may include sensitive health information discussed during your consultation. Melbourne Balance Clinic takes reasonable steps to ensure that any AI system used for clinical documentation is appropriate for healthcare and handles patient information securely.

Your information will be managed in accordance with applicable privacy laws, the Australian Privacy Principles and the clinic’s Privacy Policy. The Privacy Act applies when commercially available AI products process personal information, including tools used for transcription and note-taking.

Patient information remains confidential and will only be collected, used or disclosed for purposes connected with your care, or where otherwise permitted or required by law.

Questions About Our Use of AI

Please speak with your doctor or contact Melbourne Balance Clinic if you have questions about AI-assisted documentation or how your information is handled.

You can also advise the clinic at any time that you would prefer your consultation to be documented without the use of an AI scribe.
